ABOUT Dennis amato – YOUR MASTER INSTRUCTOR and self-defense coach!

Dennis Amato was a personal trainer for 15 years, educating his clients in physical fitness and nutrition. In 1999, he began training in Krav Maga and earned his instructor status in June of 2000; soon after which he opened the first Krav Maga school in New England. 

Since then, Dennis has taught hundreds of Federal, State and local Law Enforcement personnel throughout New England. For his teaching and dedication to keeping our officers safe, Mr. Amato received an Honorable Certificate of Appreciation from the ATF in Boston. 

Along with training Law Enforcement and Civilians alike, Coach Amato has trained several military units prior to their deployment to active duty and conducts Instructor Certification courses all over the country. 

Dennis has also been recognized by Head Coach Sam Sade for his awesome coaching style, knowledge and dedication; and was awarded a position on the Board of Directors for Alpha Krav Maga International. For more information about AKMI, please visit

Meet Our Coaches

Continued Education is our Top Priority

Here at Alpha Krav Maga Boston in Malden, we take your training seriously. Our coaches are hand-picked from our existing student base. “There is something to be said for building a coaching team comprised of our existing students” says Master Amato. Not only do they continue to train on a weekly basis, but we put our coaches through a rigorous training process after which they have to complete annual certification exams. You are in GREAT hands here at AKMI Boston!

Karen Armato

Coach Karen began her Krav Maga training in 2004, and received her instructor status in February of 2006. She holds a Black Belt in Premier Martial Arts and a Black Belt in Krav Maga, making her one of the highest ranking female instructors on the East Coast. 


Coach Karen teaches several classes per week at our facility, as well as heading our Women-Only seminars and programs. She is also an Alpha Blue Line certified instructor and teaches dozens of law enforcement personnel techniques in Krav Maga, use of force and handcuffing procedures. 

Jordan Howard

Jordan Howard began his Krav Maga training in 2014 in Nashville Tennessee with Nashville Krav Maga while working towards a career in the music industry.


After taking up Krav Maga Jordan quickly found himself training at the gym more than he was playing music. In 2015, after moving back home to Boston, Jordan continued his training with Alpha Krav Maga under lead instructors Dennis and Karen. He began instructing in 2016 and is currently the Program Director for our Youth Program.


Jordan earned his Phase A Instructor certification under Sam Sade in May of 2018 and continues to train every day as both a coach and a student. Jordan is currently dedicated to earning his black belt in both Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Tom Ryan

Tom Ryan was born and raised in Manhattan. He moved to Boston after college and earned a doctorate in Biochemistry from Boston University.  Following his Postdoctoral Fellowship, he rose to the position Assistant Professor at Pulmonary Center in the Department of Medicine at BU.


Leaving Boston University to pursue a Career in Elementary Science Education, Tom taught in the classroom for a number years in the Boston and Newton Public School Systems. He currently works as an Academic Coach and Science Tutor through his website:


Tom began been training in Krav Maga 6 years and has been coaching here at Alpha Krav Maga Boston in the Children’s Program for the last 5 years. 

Jennifer Finkle

Jennifer Finkle started training at Krav Maga Boston in 2004. In 2014, Jennifer earned her teaching certification with Sam Sade’s Alpha Krav Maga International. Since then, she has been a coach at the Alpha Krav Maga studio in Malden and at Brandeis University. She has completed courses in handgun safety at Boston Firearms Training Center in Everett.


She also trained for several months in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with “Mau Mau” Robson de Lima. At the end of 2017, Jennifer received her second degree black belt with Alpha Krav Maga. While traveling over the years, Jennifer has been fortunate to attend Krav courses in Los Angeles, New York City, Washington DC, Dublin, Tel Aviv, and Montreal.


When not kicking friends in the groin, Jennifer works as an RN in behavioral health, enjoys time with her dog, and watches classic movies.

Bob McDonald

Bob began his Krav Maga training in 2009, earning his second degree black belt at Alpha Krav Maga Boston in 2017 under Director Dennis Amato.  Bob has completed three instructor Phase Training courses under the direction of Alpha Krav Maga Master Instructor Sam Sade and has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 7 years. 


Teaching a wide range of classes at the Malden school, he has also taught at Brandeis University as well as assisting with Blue Line Law Enforcement Seminars.  Bob continues his education and training every week in Krav Maga, Kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu.

Joe Meahl

Joe was born and raised in Stoneham, MA.  He went on to attend Bentley University where he was a member of the Varsity Football and Baseball teams. 


Joe began training in Krav Maga in 2011 and currently holds a 2nd degree black belt.  He also trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and was awarded a blue belt in December 2017.
