KIND WORDS FROM OUR STUDENTS
“I’m in my early 30s and came to this gym in decent shape, doing cardio 4-6 times a week. I hike a lot and ran 50-70 miles a week but got injured a lot, and a combination of a badly strained IT band and stress fractures made me give up running, which I thought was the love of my life.
One year into training at Alpha Krav Maga, I am in the best shape of my life and have been healthy without injury. I don’t even miss running any more, training here is just that amazing. What makes Alpha Krav Maga great is a trickle down effect from the head instructors Dennis and Karen, who are outstanding coaches and who have recruited a sizeable number of strikingly excellent instructors, each of which I have learned an enormous amount from.
Under Dennis and Karen, the instructors have instilled a culture of hard work, both in terms of conditioning but also refining technique; respect for others and safety; and helping others in the gym. This, in turn, has trickled down into the members at Alpha Krav Maga. We train hard, seriously, and safely. The instructors teach and give personalized attention, and so do my training partners here. “You drop your hands after your third punch”; “Let me show you a trick with that armbar”; “Check your stance”. I do the same and give pointers when I can. We all train each other and respect each other here. There are people in all age groups; there are kids-only classes and in the adult classes you’ll find adults in all decades from the 20s to late 60s, with the balance of men and women.
It’s been a great blessing for me to be a part of this gym. If you want to learn practical self-defense, get in the best shape of your life, and can respect the people around you, you’ll love it here.”
I started training at Alpha Krav Maga Boston at the tender age of 56 years old in 2006. I had taken martial arts, like Judo, Karate, and Kickboxing from between the ages of 15 and 39. However, they were all sports oriented with little to no reality-based self-defense.
My interest in learning Krav Maga was sparked from reading a Tom Clancy book while on a flight. The main protagonist in his Splinter Cell series, Sam Fisher, was an expert in Krav Maga. I had read about Krav Maga in Black Belt Magazine back in the ‘80s, but I had not heard or read anything about it since then. When I returned home, I Googled Krav Maga and found out that there was a school just a few blocks away from where I was working. I visited the school and met Dennis Amato and Shawn Burgo. That was the beginning of my Alpha Krav Maga Boston journey. Nine years later, I received my first-degree black belt. Two and one-half years later, I received my second-degree black belt. I entered my thirteenth year of training in March and now at the age of 68, my journey continues. By the way, I train four days a week and my commute to the evening weeknight classes is 1½ hours to 1 hour and 50 minutes long. It is worth the drive!
Dennis Amato and his great instructors, provide a wonderful school culture and a safe training atmosphere. They take you beyond what you think are your physical and mental limits. You will get into great shape and learn reality-based self-defense. The school is very diverse relative to age, gender, and ethnicity. You will be welcomed into the Alpha Krav Maga Boston family with open arms.
